About Rwanda

 Known as the land of a thousand hills due to its high elevation, Rwanda is a land locked country located in the heart of Africa, bordered by Uganda to the North, Tanzania to the East, Burundi to the south and the Democratic republic of Congo to the west. It is primarily characterized by fine greenery, rolling hills and numerous lakes such as.

  1. Lake Kivu
  2. Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo.
  3. Lake Muhazi and
  4. Lake Ihema.

Its capital city, Kigali, is known to be one of the cleanest cities in Africa and in recent years, it has become an economic powerhouse through growth and development in the aftermath of the 1994 genocide. The current population is about 13 million people in a diverse and dynamic community.

Rwanda is home to the endangered mountain gorilla which is the principal attraction of the country besides subsistence agriculture. 


Tourism is growing rapidly thanks to the beauty of the country and a stable political atmosphere. Together with its regional partner states, the country has also engaged stake holders in promoting is attractions as a preference for utmost self-rekindling, through eco-tourism and a fair diverse of wildlife present in its national parks. 

Rwanda Highlights

VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

 Covered in green rainforest within magnificent mountain ranges, the towering volcanoes at 15,000 ft is located northwest of the country and is home to the endangered mountain gorilla but also, a montane ecosystem, that embrace the evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath. Its name was as a result of the chain of dormant volcanoes making up the Virunga Massif, located at the border where the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda meet. It is also home to other volcanoes which are: -

  1. Karisimbi – the highest at 4,507m, 
  2. Bisoke with its verdant crater lake, 
  3. Sabinyo, Gahinga and 
  4. Muhabura.

AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

 The plains of Akagera comprise savannah, woodland, wetland and a dozen lakes. Its open expanses are ideal for game drives with wildlife sights such as Elephant, Lion, Giraffe, Zebras, hippos, rhinos among others and a recorded 550 bird species. Available activities including hot air balloon, bird watching, sport fishing and guided nature walks. 

One of the oldest rainforests in Africa, Nyungwe is rich in biodiversity and spectacularly beautiful. The mountainous region is teaming with wildlife, including a small population of chimpanzees as well as 12 other species of primate, including the L’Hoest’s monkey endemic to the Albertine Rift.


 


GISHWATI MUKURA NATIONAL PARK

 Covering an area olf 34 sp km, Gishwati National Park is the country’s 4th National Park that is made up of a buffer zone from its forests with over 60 species of trees both indigenous and bamboo. It is also here that the Congo and Nile water catchment areas separate due to the escarpment of the Albertine Rift.

It is home to primates which include Chimpanzees, the Golden Monkey, LHoest and Blue Monkey.

Bird species: Gushwati is home to some 240 species of birds including the rifts endemic such as Ruwenzoru Batis and Turaco, Grauer ‘s swamp wable which is endangered, purple breasted weaver and the Martial Eagle.

LAKE KIVU NATIONAL PARK

 Part of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Lake Kivu in the west of Rwanda is surrounded by magnificent mountains and has deep emerald green waters covering a surface area of 2,700 km2. It is Rwanda’s largest lake and the sixth largest in Africa. It is highly saturated with gasses including methane and carbon dioxide from millions of years of decomposition and volcanic activities.
