About Uganda


Uganda, known as the pearl of Africa for its extra ordinary beauty is a landlocked country in East Africa that lies across the equator, about 800 km inland from the Indian ocean. Covering an area of 241,550 SQ KM (the size almost similar to United Kingdon), it is bordered by Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya and South Sudan. 

Located at the heart of the continent between two branches of the great rift valley, the Southern region boosts open savannah dotted with hills rising to over 1,300 meters while the western region is dominated by the Ruwenzori Mountain range which form part of the boundary with DRC and includes Africa’s third highest peak at 5,109M. 

Its geography consists of fertile plains, several large lakes, mountain ranges and an abundant of wildlife. Its remote, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a renowned mountain gorilla sanctuary, Murchison Falls National Park in the northwest is known for its 43meter tall waterfall. 

The country has about 47 million people in population consisting of dozens of ethnic groups. While English and Swahili are the official languages, there are over 40 indigenous languages spoken in Uganda, Luganda being the most common used by the Baganda and other groups. 

The cornerstone of Kenya’s capitalist economy is agriculture, which employs 80% of the people. Although coffee is the most widely cultivated commodity, Tourism and most recently, eco-tourism has replaced coffee as its largest source of foreign income. Distinctive mementos of the Safari country include Sisal baskets, batik prints on cotton, silk “kangas,” striped “kikois” (multi-purpose sarongs), soapstone carvings, and Makonde woodcarvings.

QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

 Established in 1952 as Kazinga National Park, it was later renamed to honour a visit by Queen Elizabeth the second. The park is renowned for its rich biodiversity, breathtaking landscapes, and a unique cultural heritage. Located along the western part of the country, it covers an area of approximately 1,978 sq/km with a diverse ecosystem ranging from savanna grass lands, dense forests, lakes and wet lands making it an ideal ecosystem for wildlife

Set against the incredible view of the Ruwenzori Mountains, the park offers visitors to explore the various craters whiles enjoying the panoramic views of the plains teemed with wildlife.

MUCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK

Muchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s oldest park made up of savannah grass lands, dense forests and stretching woodlands. It is home to approximately 150 mammal species, 560 bird species, 50 reptiles, and 51 amphibians. 

It lies at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley, where the Bunyoro escarpment descends into rolling, palm-dotted plains, offering one of the most dramatic landscapes in East Africa. 

The Iconic Murchison Falls is one of Africa’s strong water falls since it is forced through a narrow gorge that results to a thunderous fall creating a rainbow mist hence a natural wonder. It is also a perfect spot for viewing wildlife such as elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles and aquatic birds.

BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park lies in southwestern Uganda on the edge of the Rift Valley. Its dense forest is home to the endangered mountain gorilla with a population of about 450 documented as half the world’s population.

KIBALE FOREST NATIONAL PARK

Kibale Forest National Park is widely referred to as the primate capital of the world due to its high population of primates including chimpanzees. It is also home to a recorded 400 bird species and approximately 130 mammal species making it an ideal choice for game drives and bird watching.

The principal attraction is the guided primate tracking of at least a recoded number of 12 different primate species that include chimpanzees and monkeys. Other attractions include various species of birds, breathtaking forest hikes as well as night walks too which need to be pre-booked in advance.
